Buderim es un barrio de Australia que ha experimentado en sus aceras y espacios públicos lo que el poder de la comunidad puede lograr. Todo comenzó como repuesta a los altos precios de los limones en la ciudad de Queensland, entonces un grupo de vecinos se junto y decidió plantar un limonero en la acera. Siete años más tarde, todo el barrio está lleno de árboles frutales y verduras orgánicas totalmente disponibles para aquellos que deseen simplemente cosecharlas y utilizarlas.
El barrio Buderim se ha convertido en un verdadero huerto gigante a cargo de la comunidad. Los jardines con su césped han sido transformados a jardines con huertos y flores, con grandes maceteros y árboles frutales donde pululan niños, adultos y pájaros atraídos por la fruta.
“Uno de los problemas con la cocina es que nunca se tienen las hierbas que uno necesita a las ocho de la noche, pero ahora tenemos de todo en el barrio, solo hay que salir a la calle y tomar lo que uno necesita para su comida”, dijo el co-fundador Duncan McNaught.
Además de la comodidad de tener siempre a mano alimentos, McNaught también hace hincapié en el impacto ambiental y personal que proporciona la agricultura urbana. Mantiene a la comunidad unida, al mismo tiempo que nos proporciona alimentos de calidad y más saludables, también se ahora en petroleo, mejora la calidad del aire en el barrio, los benéficos son múltiples.
Cualquier persona en el vecindario puede beneficiarse de lo que se produce sin ningún tipo de restricción. Caroline explica que incluso la gente que ha plantado dentro de sus propiedades da libre acceso a los vecinos de tomar lo que necesiten, entre todos se coordinan para mantener el banco de semillas, repartirse las tareas de siembra y cuidados y gestionar el tema del agua para el riego.
El dúo también señaló que la comunidad también se encargo de la creación de un parque local, transformando también el barrio en un verdadero parque.
